On Thursday 17th of June, Managing Director Victor Said, CEO Ryan Lee and Project Director Tony Scott of the Rivergum Group, joined many businesses and community leaders around Australia in support of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

As a major player in the home building industry, we work tirelessly to create homes for people to live, thrive and grow in. But the reality for more than 116,000 Australians is that they are far from secure in their housing with many going homeless year ‘round. Too many within our community are caught in the gaps of unemployment, mental illness, domestic abuse and, together with the impacts of bushfires and COVID means they are dependent on organisations like Vinnies.

Managing Director, Victor Said who participated in the Vinnies CEO sleepout on his 3rd occasion, is inspired to support homelessness services to help people find housing, supporting people at risk and providing meals to people experiencing hardship. “At Rivergum Homes, we care about providing food, healthcare, counselling, education, safe accommodation to all and it is our desire to support Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise awareness of the growing issue of homelessness.”

“Rivergum exists to ‘create better lives’ and this extends beyond our wonderful staff, customers, trades and suppliers to all that we share our country with. One of the main reasons I took part of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout is homelessness continues to be a major problem in our society which is often brushed over and not addressed head on, particularly in the wake of COVID. Not only do we exist to create better lives, but fundamentally we provide shelter to customers with the means to afford it. Hopefully the money we raise for Vinnies can provide shelter and vital services for those less fortunate” says CEO Ryan Lee.

The morning prior to the sleepout, Ryan received a sudden unexpected call from his family that his father suffered a major health scare. He made the decision to board the next flight to be with his parents in Kingscliff. While Ryan was due to be taking part in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Adelaide the next night, he found an old TV box in his parents’ garage and set up his own sleepout out the front driveway of their house to bed down for the night. “Many wonderful individuals and businesses donated to this amazingly worthwhile cause off the back of my commitment to sleep rough for just one night. Despite not being in the same state, I wasn’t going to let those people down.”

Project Director, Tony Scott took Ryan’s place in Adelaide with Victor and braved the heavy 45mm of rain down pour. “The experience is certainly insightful, enjoyable and difficult all at the same time. While I experienced being cold and uncomfortable on the cardboard box, I learnt so much from the experience.  The thought of not knowing where I was going to sleep each night, or not knowing what the next few hours or even the next day ahead of me is going to be like, is harder to grasp than you can imagine.”

Vinnies helps hundreds of thousands of people every year, across Australia alone with money raised at this incredible event.  To date, Rivergum Homes have raised $19,252.05 through the CEO Sleepout Fundraiser which will help provide 61 individual support programs, 160 beds and 641 meals to those in need.

On behalf of Rivergum Homes, we would like to thank everyone who has donated to this very worthy cause. If you would still like to support Vinnies and their work, we would love your support: www.ceosleepout.org.au/fundraisers/rivergumhomes
