How to create a beautiful bedroom

Most people will spend 9125 days in their lifetime sleeping. That’s a lot of time to be in one space, so it might as well be a true sanctuary.

Fortunately, there are many ways you can make your bedroom the heart and soul of your home.

The bed

The most important feature of the bedroom is, of course, the bed! So if you have the space, go for a queen or king sized bed. A bigger bed oozes luxury and just begs you to indulge in some early nights and sleep-ins.

Purchase or make your own tufted headboard for a touch of softness. An oversized and overfilled duvet and pillows will complete this comfy zone.

Finishing off the bed area with matching side tables and high quality light fittings adds symmetry, subsequently relaxing the brain.

If you keep the bedroom exclusively for relaxation, you’ll appreciate it so much more, so place your desk and work equipment in another area of the house if you can.

Ceilings and walls

Don’t neglect the ceiling! You may spend more time staring at it than you realise. Paint the ceiling lighter than the walls to create an illusion of space and keep the paintwork fresh.

Patterned wallpaper can really add more WOW to your bedroom. You could stick to simple patterns and neutral colours, or you could be daring and choose a striking mural.  Either way, make this a feature rather than papering all four walls.

Flooring

If you have wooden flooring, consider a beautiful fluffy rug as a practical and luxurious bedroom feature. Walking barefoot across a high quality rug scores way up there on the luxury and relaxation scale.

Even if you already have carpet, you can always lay a feature rug down to complement the look of the room.

Wardrobe

Proper storage is a must-have for the bedroom. If you have the option, choose a walk in or built in wardrobe – not only are these compact and streamlined, they provide much more storage space for clothes and accessories to help keep your bedroom clutter free.

Plus, incorporating built in or walk in wardrobes in your bedroom means you can make the most of the full floor to ceiling space.

Detailing

A comfortable chair is always a great addition to any bedroom and not just so you can throw your clothes on it. A chair invites rest and can easily fit into any shape of bedroom.

Re-upholster a tired chair with some bold and luxurious fabric for a real statement – you could match it to a tufted bed head. Or you could liven up an antique piece with a cosy throw rug.

For a quick and immediate fix, personalise your furniture and cupboards by updating handles. You’d be surprised how the small details can completely uplift a room!

Setting the tone

Lighting is an effective and simple way to create relaxing and luxurious ambience in the bedroom. You can use different coloured light bulbs and shades to set the tone and mood. Layer your lighting scheme so you have main lights for dressing and lighting for relaxing.

Add an indoor plant or two to help keep the air fresh for sleep filled nights. Their refreshing green colours are great for the soul, but remember to water – there’s nothing worse than a wilted philodendron in the bedroom!

The bedroom is one of the easiest rooms in the home to transform and the ultimate place for rest and relaxation. It’s your escape from the strains and stresses of everyday life, so its worth making it luxurious and comfortable.
